Layout and Process Planning

Use this guide when an engineering team needs to compare layouts, routing, capacity, equipment access, or process-flow options before making site changes.

Planning Flow

Prerequisites

RequirementWhy it matters
Baseline layoutCandidate comparisons need a reviewed starting point.
Process ownerObjective weights and constraints need engineering ownership.
Safety constraintsAccess zones, clearance, routes, and operating limits must be visible.

Inputs

InputReview focus
Floor plan or sceneBounds, scale, zones, blocked areas, and coordinate assumptions.
Equipment listMovable elements, fixed elements, capacities, and access requirements.
Process rulesRoutes, sequence, throughput, staffing, safety zones, and service constraints.
Objective weightsTravel distance, utilization, capacity, energy, cost, or risk priorities.
Candidate runsParameters, duration, seed, KPI output, and reviewer notes.

Procedure

  1. Define the baseline layout and operating constraints.
  2. Upload or select the floor plan, scene, and equipment list.
  3. Set objective weights and allowed changes.
  4. Run layout optimization, evaluation, validation, or auto-arrange.
  5. Compare candidate KPIs and assumptions.
  6. Select a reviewed option or return to data and constraints.

Expected Output

The result should be a layout decision package containing baseline, candidates, constraints, KPIs, assumptions, and owner review.

Validation Checklist

  • Baseline and candidate IDs are recorded.
  • Constraints and objective weights are visible.
  • Layout validation checks bounds, overlap, route, and access issues.
  • KPI comparison includes assumptions and run duration.
  • Decision notes include reviewer and next action.

Failure Handling

SymptomResponse
Candidate violates access constraintsReject the candidate and update layout bounds or safety zones.
Objective weights are unclearKeep the comparison as exploratory until owner review.
Floor plan scale is wrongCorrect units and rerun validation.
KPI result is surprisingReview input constraints, run duration, and source data.
